When Sorrow Leads Us Back to God

 

“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of.” — 2 Corinthians 7:10 (KJV)

Have you ever felt deep sorrow over something you had done—not simply because you were caught or because there were consequences, but because you knew your actions had hurt God and others? That kind of sorrow can be painful, but it can also be a gift from God.

In 2 Corinthians 7, Paul describes the difference between ordinary sorrow and godly sorrow. Worldly sorrow focuses on regret, embarrassment, or the consequences of our mistakes. Godly sorrow goes deeper. It opens our eyes to sin and moves our hearts toward God. Instead of simply making us feel bad, it makes us want to change.

Paul was encouraged because the Corinthians had responded to correction with genuine repentance. Their sorrow produced something positive: “carefulness,” a desire to make things right, and a renewed commitment to do what was right (2 Corinthians 7:11).

Godly sorrow does not leave us trapped in guilt. It leads us toward repentance and restoration. When the Holy Spirit convicts us, we don't have to run from God because of our failures. We can run to Him. We can confess our sins, accept His forgiveness, and allow Him to change our hearts.

Perhaps you are experiencing that kind of sorrow right now. Don't ignore it. Don't simply drown it out with distractions. Ask God what He is trying to show you. If your sorrow is leading you to confess, turn away from sin, make things right, and draw closer to Christ, then let it accomplish its work.

God doesn't expose our sin to destroy us. He reveals it so He can heal us.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank You for loving me enough to show me the things in my life that need to change. When I experience sorrow because of my sin, help me not to run away from You. Give me genuine repentance and a heart that desires to follow You. Help me learn from my mistakes, make things right when I can, and accept Your forgiveness. Turn my sorrow into a deeper relationship with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
