  A Biblical Guide to the Gift of Tongues Few subjects in Christianity generate as much discussion and disagreement as speaking in tongues . Some Christians consider tongues one of the clearest signs of the Holy Spirit. Others believe the biblical gift refers primarily to the miraculous ability to speak languages one had never learned. Still others understand some passages as allowing a form of Spirit-inspired speech that may not be understood by the speaker or congregation. So, what does the Bible actually say? A careful reading of Scripture shows that speaking in tongues was a genuine gift of the Holy Spirit , but the Bible also places important boundaries around its use. The purpose of spiritual gifts is not to elevate an individual but to glorify God, communicate the gospel, and build up the church.   Our physical limitations can sometimes become discouraging. Age, illness, injury, weakness, disability, or simply the gradual effects of living in a fallen world remind us that our bodies are not what they were meant to be. Yet the gospel gives us a powerful reason not to let present limitations define our hope. Jesus has promised that death and decay will not have the final word. Paul gives us this assurance in 1 Corinthians 15:42–43 : “So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power.” Notice that Paul does not pretend our present weaknesses are insignificant. He acknowledges that our bodies experience corruption and weakness. But he also points us toward what God will do. The body that is now weak will one day be raised in power.   The resurrection is one of the central teachings of the Bible and one of the most important promises of the Christian faith. Scripture does not present death as the end of the story. Instead, it points forward to a day when God will raise the dead and give His people everlasting life. The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of this hope.   Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 1:12 are remarkable. Writing near the end of his life, knowing that suffering and death were ahead, he did not speak with fear or uncertainty. Instead, he declared, “I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.” Notice what gave Paul such confidence. His assurance was not based on favorable circumstances, personal strength, or the belief that everything would work out exactly as he wanted. His confidence was in a Person—Jesus Christ . Paul knew whom he had believed. Paul had experienced hardship, rejection, persecution, imprisonment, and suffering. Yet none of these things could shake his confidence in Christ.   What the Bible Really Says For centuries, Christians have worshiped on different days of the week. Some worship on Sunday, others on Saturday, and some observe multiple days in different ways. But an important question remains: What day does the Bible actually identify as the Sabbath?
