  “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?” — 2 Corinthians 13:5, KJV Paul’s words to the Corinthians are both serious and loving. He challenges them to examine their spiritual lives and determine whether their faith is genuine. He is not asking them to compare themselves with other believers or to depend on their own goodness. He is calling them to look honestly at their relationship with Jesus Christ. But what does it mean to be “in the faith” ? What Does It Mean to Be in the Faith? To be in the faith means to place our trust in Jesus Christ and to live in a relationship with Him. It is more than agreeing with certain doctrines or identifying as a Christian. It means believing in Christ, receiving His grace, and allowing Him to shape our lives. The Bible says: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Romans 5:1,...

Finding Strength, Purpose, and Hope in Christ Following Jesus does not mean we will never experience hardship. Sometimes, suffering comes precisely because we are trying to live faithfully, share the gospel, or stand for what is right. Paul understood this personally. His ministry was marked by opposition, rejection, imprisonment, physical danger, and emotional pain. Yet he did not allow suffering to convince him that God had abandoned him. Read 2 Corinthians 11:23–28. In this passage, Paul describes some of the hardships he endured as a servant of Christ. He mentions imprisonments, beatings, shipwrecks, dangers, sleepless nights, hunger, and deep concern for the churches. His words remind us that the gospel is precious, but proclaiming it can come at a cost. Have you also experienced suffering because of your faith?   The Danger of a Different Gospel Read: 2 Corinthians 11:1–15 Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 11:1–15 reveal a serious challenge facing the Corinthian church. False teachers were not necessarily attacking Christianity openly. Instead, they were presenting themselves as impressive spiritual leaders while subtly drawing believers away from the truth about Jesus. Paul begins by asking the Corinthians to bear with him in what he calls “a little folly.” He is speaking about his need to defend his ministry, something he would rather not have to do. His concern is not personal pride. It is the spiritual safety of the people he loves. He says, “For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:2, NKJV). Paul uses the picture of a bride preparing for her husband. The Problem With Comparing Ourselves Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 10:12–18 Competition can appear in places where we least expect it—even in the church. Leaders may compare their ministries, members may compare their spiritual gifts, and congregations may begin measuring success by numbers, recognition, influence, or popularity. When this happens, the focus can quietly shift from serving Christ to proving ourselves. In 2 Corinthians 10:12–18, Paul addresses this kind of attitude. Some people were measuring themselves by one another and using their own comparisons as evidence of their greatness. Paul shows us a better way: our standard must be Christ, and our purpose must be to serve rather than to compete. The Danger of Comparing Ourselves Paul writes, “For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves” (2 Corinthians 10:12, NKJV). He points out that those who measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves among themselves are “not wise...

  Read 2 Corinthians 10:1–11 Paul faced a difficult situation in Corinth. Some people questioned his authority and criticized the way he conducted himself. They apparently viewed his meekness when present with them as weakness, while believing he would be bold only when writing from a distance. But Paul’s gentleness was not a lack of courage. It was evidence of self-control and a Christlike spirit. Paul begins by appealing to the Corinthians “by the meekness and gentleness of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:1, NKJV). Yet the same Paul who speaks gently is prepared to confront those who oppose the truth. In verse 2, he warns that he may need to be bold toward those who think he walks according to the flesh. His words are not empty. He is willing to deal directly with the problem. Several phrases reveal his courage. Sabbath School Lesson 12 - Friday Further Thought  Guarding the Truth While Fulfilling the Mission “For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.” — 2 Corinthians 13:8, KJV The Bible warns that as the end approaches, false teachers will arise and attempt to lead people away from the truth. This danger is especially serious because false teaching does not always come from outside the church. Sometimes, those who distort the gospel may be within the church itself, using familiar language, claiming spiritual authority, or presenting themselves as faithful teachers. Paul faced a similar challenge in Corinth. Some people were questioning his authority and promoting ideas that threatened the church’s spiritual health. In 2 Corinthians 10, Paul gives us principles that can help churches respond to false teaching without losing sight of their mission.
