“You were cast out in the open field... but I passed by you and saw you kicking about in your blood, and I said to you, ‘Live!’”
– Ezekiel 16:6
This passage from Ezekiel is both shocking and beautiful. It’s the story of a helpless infant girl—abandoned, unloved, unwashed—left to die in a field. But God passes by. He sees. He speaks life. He raises her, clothes her, and in time, makes her His bride. This is not just Israel’s story. This is our story. And in it, we see God’s heart on full display.
God Finds Us at Our Lowest (vv. 4–6)
God’s description is vivid. The baby is discarded, still bloody from birth, uncared for. That’s a picture of complete vulnerability—and utter rejection. But God doesn’t turn away. He draws near. He doesn’t wait for the baby to clean herself up; He speaks life while she’s still covered in blood.
Application: God meets us in our filth, not in our perfection. He sees our shame, our sin, our brokenness—and He comes closer, not further away.
God Raises Us with Tender Care (vv. 7)
The child grows under God’s watchful eye. She flourishes—not because of her own strength, but because God is nurturing her. She becomes beautiful, but she is still not yet clothed—still in need of covering.
Application: Our growth is not by accident. Every step, every lesson, every blessing—it all comes from the hand of a patient and loving Father. He doesn't just save; He shepherds.
God Makes Us His Own (vv. 8–14)
Then, in a moment of divine romance, God spreads His garment over her—a sign of covenant, of marriage. He washes her, anoints her, dresses her in fine linen and jewels. The once-abandoned child becomes a radiant bride, “exceedingly beautiful,” with a beauty that comes from God Himself.
Application: This is what grace looks like. God doesn’t just rescue us; He restores us. He doesn’t just clean us up; He crowns us. We were not saved merely to survive—we were saved to shine with the beauty of His love.
We are the Bride of Christ
The exaltation of this bride teaches us that God is not content to leave us as He found us. His intention is always restoration, always relationship, always radiance. In Christ, we see the ultimate fulfillment of this picture—He gave Himself for a Bride, the Church, that she might be presented "without spot or wrinkle" (Eph. 5:27).
So when you feel unworthy, remember: God knew everything about you—your mess, your sin, your shame—and still, He passed by and said, "Live." He didn't just save you. He made you His. Amen.
