Recent tax records from Kettering Health — a large nonprofit hospital network affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church — reveal that between 2016 and 2022, the organization reported more than $3.2 million in improper “excess benefits” paid to 46 individuals and their families, according to an amended IRS tax filing based on a forensic audit completed in 2023. These excess benefits include personal travel (e.g., trips to Europe, Hawaii, and a whale-watching trip in Maui), spa retreats, home decorations, meals, and other perks that lacked clear business purposes.
Among those who received the largest benefits were former CEO Fred Manchur and his wife Mary Kaye Manchur, who together received nearly $1.5 million in improper benefits. Numerous Seventh-day Adventist Church leaders also appeared on the list, including former and current conference presidents and officers, pastors, and a church director. Specific examples include Ron Halvorsen Jr., former Ohio Conference president, who (with his wife) received about $391,609 in benefits, and current Ohio Conference president Bob Cundiff and his wife, who received more than $84,000. Other leaders such as Emmanuel Asiedu and Andrea Jakobsons and family members received substantial travel and retreat-related benefits.
Kettering Health has acknowledged that an Ohio Attorney General investigation into alleged inappropriate expenditures is ongoing. The hospital claims it has sought repayment from many individuals and has made internal governance changes following its own investigation. In some cases, people reportedly did not even realize they had received improper benefits until notified. The amended tax filing lists several individuals who had not repaid their excess benefits as of reporting.
