Living with Christ
Lesson 12 - Thursday
Walking in Wisdom
Speaking and Living with Grace
Read: Colossians 4:5–6
The apostle Paul the Apostle gives a simple yet powerful instruction: “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt…” (Colossians 4:5–6, KJV). His focus is clear—believers must be especially careful in how they live and speak before those who do not yet share their faith.
Paul points to situations where we interact with “those who are without,” meaning people outside the Christian faith. In these moments, wisdom matters greatly because our conduct becomes a living testimony. Many people may never read the Bible, but they will read the lives of those who claim to follow Christ. Our attitudes, our patience, our kindness, and even the tone of our speech can either draw people toward the gospel or push them away.
Paul also says we should be “redeeming the time.” Opportunities to reflect Christ often come quietly—through everyday conversations, acts of kindness, or moments when someone is hurting and needs encouragement. Wisdom helps us recognize these openings and respond with grace. Instead of careless or harsh words, our speech should be “seasoned with salt”—meaning thoughtful, appealing, and helpful. Words like these preserve relationships and awaken interest in spiritual things.
This counsel invites personal reflection. Consider how you speak to coworkers, neighbors, family members, or strangers. Are your words patient and gracious? Do your actions reflect the character of Christ? The way we live each day sends a message about what we truly believe. When our lives demonstrate humility, integrity, and compassion, people begin to see that following Jesus changes the heart.
Walking in wisdom does not mean being perfect. It means being mindful that we represent Christ wherever we go. When our lives reflect His love, our witness becomes powerful—even in the simplest moments.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the counsel found in Your Word. Help me to walk in wisdom each day, especially before those who do not yet know You. Guard my words so that they are gracious and thoughtful, and guide my actions so that they reflect the character of Jesus. Help me recognize opportunities to share Your love and use my life as a testimony of Your grace. May everything I say and do point others toward You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
