Lesson 12 - Sunday

Empowered to Witness

Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave His followers a mission that still applies to every believer today. In Matthew 28:18–20, often called the Great Commission, Jesus repeatedly uses the word "all" (Greek: pas), emphasizing the complete scope of His authority, mission, and presence.

Notice these powerful assurances:

  • "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth" (Matthew 28:18).
  • "Make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19).
  • "Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:20).
  • "I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

Jesus leaves no room for uncertainty. He possesses all authority. His gospel is for all people. His teachings encompass all that we need for life and godliness. And perhaps most comforting of all, He is with us always.

When we read Acts 1:8, we discover how this mission would be accomplished. Jesus promised that His followers would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them. They were not expected to witness in their own strength. The Holy Spirit would empower ordinary people to accomplish an extraordinary task.

The early church took this calling seriously. In Acts 4:13, Peter and John stood before religious leaders who were astonished by their boldness. These were not highly educated scholars or influential leaders. They were common men. Yet their confidence, courage, and conviction made a powerful impression.

The religious authorities recognized something remarkable: Peter and John had been with Jesus.

That was the secret of their witness. Their effectiveness did not come from advanced training, eloquent speech, or social status. It came from a living relationship with Christ. Spending time with Jesus transformed them from fearful disciples into courageous witnesses.

Their testimony impacted everyone who heard them. Thousands came to faith, lives were changed, and the gospel spread rapidly throughout the known world. The early believers spoke with courage because they knew the One who had all authority and had promised to be with them always.

The same promise belongs to us today. Many believers hesitate to share their faith because they fear saying the wrong thing or being rejected. Yet God does not ask us to be perfect witnesses. He asks us to be available. The Holy Spirit still empowers believers, gives wisdom, opens doors, and prepares hearts.

As we seek opportunities to share Christ, 1 John 4:7–11 reminds us that love must be our motivation. God loved us first. He demonstrated that love through the sacrifice of His Son. Therefore, our witness should never be driven by obligation, pride, or argument. It should flow naturally from hearts filled with God's love for others.

When people encounter genuine Christian love, they see a reflection of the God we serve. Like Peter and John, our greatest testimony may simply be that others can tell we have been with Jesus.

Today, ask God to fill you with His Spirit, His wisdom, and His love. He may place someone in your path who needs encouragement, hope, or a simple word about His grace. Trust Him to guide your words and use your witness for His glory.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the privilege of sharing Your love with others. Thank You that Jesus has all authority and that He promises to be with us always. Fill us with the power of the Holy Spirit and give us courage to speak when You open doors. Grant us wisdom to know when to share and what to say. Help us not to witness out of fear or duty, but out of the love You have poured into our hearts. Teach us to love others as You have loved us. May people see Jesus in our lives and be drawn closer to Him. Use us today as Your witnesses wherever You place us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
