Lesson 11 - Friday Further Thought
Seeing God Clearly Through Our Setbacks
Life has a way of changing our perspective. When things are going well, it is often easy to believe that God is good, loving, and in control. But when setbacks come—a lost job, a broken relationship, a health crisis, unanswered prayers, or unexpected disappointments—we may begin to question who God really is. We might wonder if He has forgotten us, stopped caring, or abandoned us altogether.
The truth is that setbacks often reveal more about our understanding of God than they do about God Himself. Difficult circumstances can distort our picture of Him if we allow our emotions to become the primary lens through which we view His character. Yet God invites us to see Him not through our circumstances, but through His revealed Word.
The Gospel of John gives us one of the clearest pictures of God's true character because it focuses on Jesus Christ, who perfectly reveals the Father. Jesus declared, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9, NKJV). If we want to know what God is like, we must look at Jesus.
Consider John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son." Even in our darkest moments, this verse reminds us that God's heart toward us is one of sacrificial love. Our circumstances may change, but His love does not.
When setbacks leave us feeling abandoned, Jesus offers reassurance: "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you" (John 14:18, NKJV). God does not walk away when life becomes difficult. Often, He is closest when we feel weakest.
When suffering causes us to question God's intentions, Jesus reminds us of His purpose: "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly" (John 10:10, NKJV). While we may not understand every trial, we can trust that God is working for our ultimate good and eternal salvation.
John also records Jesus saying, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you" (John 14:27, NKJV). The peace Christ offers is not dependent upon favorable circumstances. It is rooted in the certainty that God remains faithful, even when life feels uncertain.
Perhaps your setback has left scars, unanswered questions, or lingering pain. Yet it can also become an opportunity to know God more deeply. Trials often strip away false ideas about God and lead us to discover His patience, mercy, faithfulness, and grace in ways we could never experience during easier seasons.
Instead of asking, "Why did this happen to me?" we can ask, "What is God teaching me about Himself through this?" As we spend time in Scripture and focus on Jesus, our distorted views begin to fade, and God's true character shines more clearly. We discover that He is not merely the God of our victories but also the God who walks beside us through every valley.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, when setbacks and disappointments cloud my vision, help me to see You as You truly are. Keep me from judging Your character by my circumstances. Teach me to look to Jesus, who perfectly reveals Your love, compassion, and faithfulness. Strengthen my faith when I struggle, give me peace when I am troubled, and remind me that You never abandon Your children. Help me trust Your heart even when I cannot understand Your plans. Thank You for being patient with me and for continuing to work in my life through every trial. In Jesus' name, Amen.
