Lesson 6 - Sunday

One Spirit, One Purpose

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1–6

The church in Corinth struggled with divisions, pride, and competition. Even when it came to spiritual gifts, some believers believed that certain gifts made them more important than others. Paul begins 1 Corinthians 12 by correcting this misunderstanding. He reminds the church that while there are many different spiritual gifts, they all come from the same Holy Spirit. There are different ways to serve, but they all honor the same Lord Jesus. There are different works and ministries, but it is the same God who works through every believer. The emphasis is not on the gifts themselves but on the God who gives them.

Paul repeatedly points to unity because unity is essential to the health of Christ's church. Satan delights in creating comparison, jealousy, and pride among believers. When Christians begin comparing gifts instead of celebrating them, the church becomes divided and less effective in its mission. God never intended for every believer to have the same abilities. Instead, He designed the church like a body, where each member has a unique role that contributes to the whole. Every gift, whether public or behind the scenes, is valuable when it is used to glorify Christ and serve others.

This truth remains just as important today. Some people teach, others encourage, some lead, some give generously, and others quietly serve without recognition. It is easy to admire visible ministries while overlooking faithful acts of service that few people ever notice. Yet God values obedience more than popularity. He is the One who gives the gifts, determines where they are used, and empowers them to bear fruit. Rather than wishing for someone else's abilities, we should faithfully use the gifts God has entrusted to us.

The unity Paul describes is not uniformity. Christians come from different backgrounds, cultures, personalities, and experiences. God delights in this diversity because it demonstrates His wisdom and creativity. Despite these differences, believers are united by one Savior, one Spirit, one faith, and one mission—to proclaim Jesus Christ to the world. When the church walks in humility and love, each member using his or her God-given gifts, it becomes a powerful witness of God's grace.

Today, ask God to help you discover and faithfully use the gifts He has given you. Instead of comparing yourself with others, rejoice that God is at work through every believer. As each member serves with humility and love, the church reflects the beauty of Christ and fulfills the purpose for which He established it.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving every believer spiritual gifts to build up Your church. Forgive us when we become proud, jealous, or critical of one another. Help us remember that every gift comes from You and is meant to glorify Jesus. Teach us to value each member of the body of Christ and to work together in love and unity. Show us how You want us to serve, and give us humble hearts that seek Your glory rather than our own. May our churches reflect the unity of Your Spirit so that the world may see Christ through us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
