Changed by the Cross
“God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” — 2 Corinthians 5:19
It is easy to forget how much we have received from Christ. Take a moment to think about what your life would be like without the cross. The guilt of sin, the condemnation we deserve, and the hopelessness of separation from God would be ours. Yet Jesus willingly took our place. He bore our sins, suffered our punishment, and opened the way for us to be reconciled to God.
Paul says, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The cross was not something we earned or deserved. It was an expression of God's incredible grace.
But receiving that grace should change the way we treat other people. If Christ was willing to forgive us when we were separated from Him, how can we look down on those who are still searching for Him? If we recognize how desperately we needed God's mercy, we should become more patient, compassionate, and willing to reach out to others.
Paul declares, “The love of Christ constraineth us” (2 Corinthians 5:14). Christ's love should move us beyond judgment and toward compassion. There are people around us carrying guilt, confusion, fear, and pain. Some may not know Jesus at all. They don't need us to condemn them; they need us to show them, through our words and actions, what the love of Christ looks like.
The cross reminds us that we are not better than anyone else. We are people who have been rescued by grace. And because Christ reconciled us to God, He has entrusted us with “the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18). Today, let the reality of what Jesus has done for you make you more gracious toward others and more intentional about pointing them to Him.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to bear my sin and condemnation at the cross. Help me never to forget how much I have been forgiven and how completely Your grace has changed my life. Let Christ's love shape the way I treat others, especially those who do not yet know You. Make me patient, compassionate, forgiving, and willing to share the hope I have found in Jesus. Use my life to help others see Your love. In Jesus' name, amen.
