Old Testament Prophets

Lesson 3 - Tuesday

When God Speaks to Kings and Priests

In the Bible, God established different roles for His people. Kings were responsible for governing, priests were responsible for ministry and worship, and prophets were called to communicate God's message. These roles were different, but none of them placed a person above God's authority.

First Samuel 8 gives us an important example. Israel demanded a king because they wanted to be “like all the nations.” Samuel was displeased with their request and prayed to the Lord. God told Samuel to listen to the people, but also instructed him to solemnly warn them about what a king would do. Samuel faithfully delivered God's warning.

This is one of the important functions of a prophet. A prophet was not simply someone who predicted the future. Prophets were God's messengers, called to speak His truth to leaders and ordinary people alike. When kings made wrong decisions, prophets could confront them. When God's people wandered from Him, prophets could call them back.

Samuel's relationship with Saul and later David demonstrates this clearly. The king might have possessed political authority, but the king was still accountable to God. The prophet served as a reminder that the king did not have the final word. God's Word did.

Leviticus 8 gives us a different picture. Aaron and his sons were being consecrated for the priesthood. Moses was instructed to take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it, and then anoint Aaron. The priests were set apart for sacred service.

Here we see another important distinction. Priests had responsibilities involving worship, sacrifices, and the sanctuary. Prophets had a different calling. They communicated God's instructions and often reminded priests, kings, and the entire nation that their religious responsibilities were to be carried out according to God's will.

Moses himself illustrates how these roles could sometimes overlap in one person, but the offices were not identical. God had a purpose for kings, priests, and prophets, yet all of them were servants under His authority.

This is an important lesson for us today. Position does not make someone automatically right. A person may have an impressive title, leadership position, or religious responsibility, but every human being remains accountable to God and His Word.

The prophets served an important purpose because they reminded God's people—including their leaders—that authority ultimately belongs to God. They were not simply cheerleaders for kings or priests. They were messengers who were willing to speak God's truth, even when that truth was uncomfortable.

We need that same humility today. Whether we are leading a church, teaching a class, raising a family, or simply making decisions in our own lives, we should remember that we answer to God. The question is not merely, “What do I want?” or “What does everyone else think?” The deeper question is, “What has God said?”

The story of Samuel reminds us that even kings must listen to God's Word. The consecration of Aaron reminds us that even priests serve according to God's instructions. And the ministry of the prophets reminds us that God does not leave His people without correction, guidance, and truth.

Ultimately, every human leader is a servant. God alone is the true King.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving Your people guidance through kings, priests, prophets, and other servants. Help us remember that every human authority is ultimately accountable to You. Give our leaders wisdom, humility, and a willingness to follow Your Word. Give us the courage to accept correction when we are wrong and the discernment to recognize when human opinions conflict with Your truth. Help us never to place people, positions, traditions, or institutions above You. May our lives always point back to Jesus, our true King and faithful High Priest. In His name, Amen.
