Not Perfect But Willing
The lives of the Old Testament prophets remind us that being God’s messenger has never been easy. They faced fear, opposition, discouragement, and personal struggles. Ellen G. White experienced many of these same anxieties. She was only seventeen, shy, in poor health, and lacking confidence when she believed God was calling her to share what He had revealed. The thought of the responsibility frightened her so much that she prayed for God to choose someone else.
Yet God continued to lead her, and eventually she accepted the call. She did not become a messenger because she was perfect or fearless. She became willing to obey despite her weaknesses.
That is an important lesson for every believer. God has never needed perfect people before He could use them. Scripture is filled with imperfect men and women who struggled with fear, doubt, weakness, and failure. What mattered was their willingness to trust God and follow where He led.
Ellen G. White would go on to become an influential voice in the development of the Seventh-day Adventist movement. Her ministry contributed to its emphasis on Bible truth, education, health, and worldwide mission. Her writings would eventually fill many volumes and continue to influence Adventists around the world.
But perhaps the most encouraging part of her story is not how much she accomplished. It is where she began: young, uncertain, physically weak, and afraid of the responsibility God placed before her. Her story reminds us that God can accomplish great things through people who are simply willing to say, "Lord, I will follow You."
Personal Application
Perhaps you sometimes feel that you are not qualified to be used by God. You may see your weaknesses, past mistakes, lack of confidence, age, or circumstances and think that someone else would be better suited for the task. But God does not ask you to be perfect before you serve Him. He asks you to be willing. You may not know exactly what God will ask of you, but you can take the next faithful step. Your weakness does not disqualify you from serving God; when surrendered to Him, it can become an opportunity to see His strength at work.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that You can use imperfect people who are willing to trust You. When we feel afraid, inadequate, or unqualified, help us remember that our strength does not come from ourselves but from You. Give us the courage to follow when You call, even when we do not know what lies ahead. Help us not to allow fear or our weaknesses to keep us from serving You. Teach us to take the next faithful step and trust You with the results. May our lives point others to Jesus and His saving grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
