Crossing the Jordan: Preparing for God’s Presence

Lessons of Faith from Joshua - Sabbath School Lesson 3 -  Sunday

“Preparing for God’s Presence”

Joshua 3:1–5; Numbers 14:41–44

When the Israelites camped by the Jordan River, ready to enter the Promised Land, God gave them a command through Joshua: Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you” (Joshua 3:5). This moment was sacred—God was about to reveal His power in a new way. But before they could witness His mighty act, the people had to prepare themselves spiritually.

The ark of the covenant, carried by the priests, symbolized the very presence of God among His people. It was to go before them, showing that the Lord Himself would lead the way into the unknown. The people were not to move ahead of the ark, nor to act on their own wisdom. They were to follow at a distance, watching and waiting on God’s direction. This was a test of faith and obedience—a reminder that spiritual victory comes only when we move in step with God’s presence and purpose.

In contrast, when some Israelites once tried to go into battle without God’s guidance (Numbers 14:41–44), they were defeated. Moses warned them not to go, for the Lord was not with them, but they went anyway—trusting in their own strength. The result showed the danger of acting apart from divine instruction. God’s power is not something we can assume or control; it accompanies those who humbly walk in obedience.

To “consecrate” ourselves today means to set apart our hearts for God—to repent of sin, renew our devotion, and make room for His leading. We do this through prayer, reflection, surrender, and obedience. When we clear away distractions and align our lives with His will, we become ready for His “amazing things.”

Spiritual preparedness is not a moment but a mindset—a daily posture of listening and yielding. We develop it by staying close to God’s Word, seeking His presence in prayer, and learning to wait for His timing. Then, when God moves, we will not miss it. We will see His hand at work, discern His interventions on our behalf, and follow Him with confidence into the promises He has prepared for us.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to consecrate myself before You each day. Teach me to wait on Your presence, follow Your instructions, and walk in obedience. Prepare my heart to recognize Your hand at work and to trust You completely as You lead me forward. Amen.
