The Living God of Wonders: The God Who Does the Impossible

Lessons of Faith from Joshua - Sabbath School Lesson 3 -  Monday

The God Who Does the Impossible

Joshua 3:6–17

As the Israelites stood at the edge of the Jordan River, the promise of the land before them seemed so close—and yet, utterly impossible to reach. The river was at flood stage, overflowing its banks. Yet God told Joshua to have the priests carry the ark of the covenant and step into the rushing waters. As soon as their feet touched the edge of the river, the waters stopped flowing and stood up like a wall, and the people crossed on dry ground.

This scene shows us a God who is not limited by natural laws or human circumstances. The God of Joshua is a God of miracles and wonders—a God who makes a way where there seems to be no way. He is not distant or powerless; He is living, active, and faithful to His word. The ark of the covenant, representing God’s presence among His people, went before them into the river, showing that every miracle begins with God leading the way.

Centuries later, the prophet Zechariah reminded the returning exiles of this same truth:

“If it is marvelous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvelous in My eyes? says the Lord of hosts. Behold, I will save My people… and they shall be My people, and I will be their God in truth and righteousness.”
(Zechariah 8:6–8)

God never stopped being the God of wonders. What seems too marvelous or too difficult to us is never too hard for Him. His power and faithfulness remain unchanged. He delights in doing what seems impossible—not merely to astonish us, but to reveal His presence and to strengthen our faith.

When Jesus spoke with His disciples after the rich ruler turned away, they were troubled at His words about how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God. Jesus responded:

“What is impossible with men is possible with God.”
(Luke 18:27)

That same promise echoes across time—from the Jordan River to the cross and into our lives today. The God who parted the waters is the same God who opens hearts, heals wounds, restores faith, and overcomes impossibilities. He invites us to trust Him when the waters rise, to step forward in faith, and to believe that His power is greater than any obstacle we face.

Prayer:
Lord God, You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. You are the God who parts waters, moves mountains, and brings life where there is none. Help me to trust You when I face the impossible. Let my faith rest not in my strength, but in Your power and promises. Go before me as You did before Israel, and help me to follow You with courage and obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
