Seeing the Bigger Picture
The story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24:13–27 reveals a striking contrast between human understanding and divine perspective. As they walked away from Jerusalem, the disciples were discouraged, confused, and heartbroken. They believed that Jesus was the promised Messiah, but His crucifixion seemed to shatter their hopes. From their viewpoint, the story had ended in defeat.
Jesus, however, saw something entirely different.
As He joined them on the road, the disciples did not recognize Him. They focused on the events they could see and understand—the arrest, the trial, the cross, and the tomb. Their perspective was limited to the immediate circumstances. Jesus, on the other hand, saw the fulfillment of God's eternal plan. What looked like a tragedy to them was actually a victory over sin and death.
How often do we find ourselves in the same position? We face disappointments, unanswered prayers, setbacks, or painful circumstances and conclude that God has failed us. We focus on the chapter we are currently living and forget that God is writing the entire story.
The disciples believed they understood what should have happened. Jesus gently showed them that God's plan was far greater than their expectations. Beginning with Moses and the Prophets, He explained how the Scriptures pointed to His suffering and glory. What seemed like a disaster was actually the very means by which salvation would come to the world.
When we look at our lives through our own perspective alone, discouragement can easily take hold. We see delays and assume God is absent. We see obstacles and assume God is finished. We see suffering and wonder whether He still cares. Yet God's perspective reaches beyond what we can see. He knows the purpose behind every trial, every waiting period, and every unexpected turn.
The road to Emmaus reminds us that even when we do not recognize Him, Jesus is walking beside us. He is present in our confusion, patient with our questions, and faithful in our struggles. While we see only a small piece of the puzzle, He sees the completed picture.
Today, choose to trust God's perspective over your own. When circumstances seem confusing, remember that the Lord who sees the end from the beginning is guiding your steps. The same Savior who walked with those discouraged disciples is walking with you, leading you toward a future filled with hope.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times we focus only on what we can see and fail to trust Your greater plan. Help us remember that Your perspective is far higher than ours and that You are always working for our good, even when circumstances seem confusing. Give us faith to trust You when answers are delayed and courage to keep walking with You through every trial. Open our eyes to recognize Your presence and help us rest in the assurance that You are in control. In Jesus' name, Amen.
