What Love Does

  Sabbath School First and Second Corinthians  A Portrait of Love Lesson 7 - Monday Love in Action “Charity suffereth long, and is kind.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4, KJV When we think about love, we often think about feelings. We associate love with affection, warmth, friendship, and the emotional connection we experience toward another person. But when Paul describes love in 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, he gives us something much deeper. Paul describes love primarily through actions . Love is patient. Love is kind. Love rejoices with others. Love bears, believes, hopes, and endures. These are things we do. They reveal that Spirit-driven love is not simply an emotion that comes and goes. It is a way of living. Love Shows Patience Paul begins by saying that love is patient. Biblical patience means more than simply waiting for something.   Sabbath School First and Second Corinthians  A Portrait of Love Lesson 7 - Sunday When Love Grows Cold “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” — Matthew 24:12, KJV Read 1 Corinthians 13, and one truth becomes impossible to miss: love is not merely something we feel; it is something we choose to live. Paul describes love as patient, kind, humble, selfless, forgiving, truthful, hopeful, and enduring. Love does not envy or boast. It does not seek its own way or keep a record of wrongs. Most importantly, love does not give up easily. Paul’s message is especially powerful because he places love above spiritual gifts and impressive accomplishments. A person may speak beautifully, understand great truths, possess remarkable faith, or give generously, but without love, those things lose their true spiritual value. Keeping Love Alive in a Cold World

When Love Grows Cold Read Matthew 24:12: “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” — Matthew 24:12, KJV Jesus gave His disciples a sobering warning about the last days. As sin and lawlessness increase, something else can happen: love can grow cold . Notice that Jesus did not say that people would stop loving altogether. Rather, He warned that the love that once burned warmly could gradually become cold. This can happen when we are surrounded by selfishness, anger, conflict, disappointment, and sin. If we are not careful, the coldness around us can eventually find its way into our own hearts. This is why agapē love is so essential. Agapē is not merely an emotion or affection that depends upon how others treat us. It is a selfless love that seeks the good of others. It chooses patience when irritation would be easier. It offers forgiveness when resentment feels justified. It serves when there is nothing to gain in return. We especially need this kind of lov...

He tells us not only what love does, but also what love does not do . Why spend so much time describing the negative side of love? Because love is more than a feeling or a collection of good intentions. Love changes the way we respond to other people. Sometimes the clearest evidence that love is growing in our hearts is found in the things we refuse to do. Paul gives us eight powerful reminders. Love does not envy. We may admire someone’s gifts, accomplishments, opportunities, or blessings, but love does not resent them because they have something we wish we had.
