When We Try to Hide From God
After Adam and Eve sinned, something changed immediately. Genesis 3:8 says that when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden, “Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.”
Think about that for a moment. They had known God as their loving Creator. They had enjoyed His presence. But after disobeying Him, they hid.
Why? Shame.
Sin often makes us want to do the same thing. When we know we have done something wrong, our first instinct may be to pull away from God. We may feel guilty, embarrassed, unworthy, or afraid of what He might think of us. We may tell ourselves, “I need to get my life together before I come back to God.”
But there is a problem with that thinking. We cannot hide from God.
Jeremiah 23:24 says, “Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD.” Hebrews 4:13 tells us that there is no creature hidden from His sight. God already sees everything. He knows what we have done, what we have said, and even what is happening inside our hearts.
And yet, knowing everything about us, God still came looking for Adam and Eve.
That is one of the most beautiful parts of this story. God did not abandon them because they sinned. He called out, “Where art thou?” He knew where they were. He wasn't asking because He needed information. He was giving them an opportunity to come out of hiding and face Him.
God does the same for us.
When we sin, shame tells us to run away from God. Grace tells us to run toward Him. Shame says, “You have failed, so hide.” Jesus says, “Come to Me.”
Maybe you have experienced that yourself. Perhaps after doing something you knew was wrong, you felt ashamed and avoided prayer. Maybe you stopped reading your Bible because you felt unworthy. Maybe you thought God was disappointed in you and that you needed to fix yourself before coming back to Him.
But God does not ask us to clean ourselves up before approaching Him. He asks us to come honestly.
The answer to sin is not hiding. It is confession, repentance, and trusting in the mercy of God. First John 1:9 reminds us that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves with leaves. We sometimes try to cover our mistakes with excuses, silence, busyness, or even religious activity. But only God can truly cover our sin.
The good news of the gospel is that Jesus came looking for sinners. He came for people who have failed, people who are ashamed, and people who have nowhere else to hide.
So when you sin, don't run away from God. Run toward Him. The God who sees everything is also the God who loves you completely. You cannot hide from His presence—and you don't have to. His desire is not to destroy you, but to restore your relationship with Him.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that even when we fail, You do not turn away from us. Forgive us for the times we have allowed shame and guilt to make us hide from You. Help us to remember that You already know everything about us and still love us. Give us the courage to confess our sins, accept Your forgiveness, and walk openly with You. Thank You for Jesus, who makes restoration possible. Help us to run toward You instead of hiding from You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
