If You Want to Know God, Look at Jesus
When You Want to Know What God Is Like
Sometimes people struggle with the idea of God because they imagine Him as distant, harsh, or difficult to understand. But Jesus came to change that picture. When we look at Jesus—His love, His compassion, His patience, and especially His willingness to give His life for us—we see the heart of the Father.
Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9, NKJV). That is an amazing statement. Jesus was not saying that He and the Father are the same Person, but that His life perfectly revealed the Father’s character. If we want to know what God is like, we can look at Jesus.
Think about how Jesus treated people who were hurting. He touched the leper, welcomed children, forgave sinners, healed the sick, and showed compassion to those whom society had rejected. Even while hanging on the cross, He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34, NKJV). The cross gives us perhaps the clearest picture of God’s character. God did not stand far away from humanity’s suffering. In Christ, He entered our world and gave Himself for us.
John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.” The sacrifice of Jesus was not Jesus trying to convince an unwilling Father to love us. The Father Himself loved us and gave His Son for us. Paul makes this even clearer: “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself” (2 Corinthians 5:19, NKJV). The Father and Son were united in the same purpose—to rescue humanity.
That gives us tremendous comfort. When we fail, we do not have to wonder whether God is waiting for an opportunity to reject us. When we are afraid, we do not have to imagine that God is indifferent to our struggles. When we feel unworthy, we can look at the cross and remember the incredible value God has placed on us. Jesus reveals a Father who loves His children and wants them restored to Him.
Hebrews 1:3 says that Jesus is “the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person.” Jesus is the clearest revelation of God that humanity has ever received. The more we understand Christ, the more clearly we understand the Father.
So when you wonder what God is really like, look at Jesus. Look at His hands reaching toward the hurting. Look at His patience with His disciples. Look at His tears at Lazarus’s tomb. Look at His forgiveness. And finally, look at the cross. There we see divine love willing to give everything to save us.
Prayer: Father, thank You for revealing Your heart through Jesus. When we are tempted to doubt Your love or misunderstand Your character, help us look again to Christ. Help us see Your compassion, patience, forgiveness, and self-sacrificing love. Thank You that Jesus came not only to save us but also to show us what You are truly like. Help us trust You more deeply and reflect that same love to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
