The Gift of Prophecy

Revelation and Inspiration

Lesson 5 - Friday Further Thought

Ellen G. White believed that the Bible is God’s authoritative revelation of truth and the foundation for understanding His plan of salvation. Although Seventh-day Adventists believe she possessed the spiritual gift of prophecy, she consistently uplifted Scripture rather than placing her writings on the same level as the Bible. Her ministry was intended to direct people toward God’s Word and help them understand and apply its teachings.

Ellen White understood inspiration as a combination of divine revelation and human expression. God communicated His messages to prophets through visions, dreams, thoughts, words, and symbolic representations, while the prophets expressed those messages through their own language and experiences. She believed that inspiration guided the prophet’s mind rather than dictating every word, allowing the divine message to be communicated through human writers.

She also acknowledged that not everything she wrote or said was specially inspired by the Holy Spirit. Ordinary letters, personal communications, and everyday information did not necessarily carry prophetic authority. Recognizing this distinction helps readers approach her writings thoughtfully rather than assuming that every statement or personal observation was a direct message from God.

Understanding these principles encourages us to avoid extremes when studying Ellen White’s writings. We can appreciate her ministry and consider her counsel while keeping the Bible as our ultimate authority for faith and doctrine. Every teaching should be examined carefully in light of Scripture, allowing God’s Word to guide our understanding of truth.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word as a trustworthy guide for our faith and our lives. Help us understand the prophetic gift with wisdom, humility, and discernment. Teach us to appreciate helpful spiritual counsel without placing human writings above Scripture. Give us hearts willing to examine every teaching in the light of Your Word and to follow the truth You reveal. May the Holy Spirit guide us into a deeper understanding of Jesus and His saving grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
