Old Testament Prophets

Lesson 4 - Sunday

Jesus, the Prophet Who Is More Than a Prophet

Bible Reading: Matthew 16:13–16; Mark 8:27–29; Luke 9:18–20

“Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” — Matthew 16:14, NKJV

During His ministry, Jesus asked His disciples an important question: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” (Matthew 16:13, NKJV). The answers revealed that people recognized something special about Him. Some believed He was John the Baptist raised from the dead, while others thought He was Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.

Why did people make these comparisons? The prophets of the Old Testament had spoken God's messages, warned people about sin, called them to repentance, and pointed them toward God's promises. Jesus did these things, too. He boldly confronted hypocrisy, called sinners to repentance, revealed God's character, and taught with an authority that astonished His listeners.

Some may have thought Jesus was another prophet sent by God to help Israel. Others may have connected Him with the promised prophet Moses spoke about in Deuteronomy 18:15, whom God would raise up from among His people. Jesus certainly fulfilled the prophetic role of revealing God's truth and calling people to follow Him.

But Jesus was far more than another prophet.

Jesus then made the question personal: “But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15, NKJV). Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16, NKJV).

Peter recognized that Jesus was the promised Messiah, God's Anointed One. He was not merely a messenger delivering God's words; He was the divine Son who came to reveal God to humanity. As John 1:18 explains, Jesus makes the Father known to us.

This distinction matters. The prophets pointed people toward God, but Jesus came to bring us directly into a saving relationship with God. He did not merely tell us that God loves us; He demonstrated that love through His life, death, and resurrection. He did not merely warn us about the consequences of sin; He gave His life to redeem us from sin.

There is also a personal lesson in this encounter. It was not enough for the disciples to repeat what other people believed about Jesus. He wanted them to answer for themselves. The same question confronts us today. We may know Bible stories, understand Christian teachings, and hear what others say about Jesus. But have we personally accepted Him as our Savior and Lord?

Recognizing Jesus as a prophet is important, but stopping there misses the heart of who He is. He is the One who reveals the Father's character, offers forgiveness, gives us hope beyond death, and promises eternal life to those who trust in Him.

Today, let us move beyond simply knowing what others say about Jesus. Let us know Him through His Word, trust His promises, and follow His teachings. The most important question is not merely what the world believes about Jesus, but what we believe about Him and how that belief shapes our lives.

Jesus is the Prophet who speaks God's truth, the Messiah who fulfills God's promises, and the Son of God who gave Himself to save us. May our answer to His question be reflected not only in our words but also in our daily walk with Him.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to reveal Your character and truth to us. Thank You that He is more than a prophet or teacher, but Your Son and our promised Messiah. Help me to know Him personally through Your Word and to trust Him as my Savior and Lord. Give me the courage to stand by my faith even when others misunderstand who Jesus is. May my words, choices, and actions show that I truly believe in Him. Help me share His love and truth with others so they, too, may come to know Him. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
