The Gift of Prophecy

Old Testament Prophets

Lesson 4 - Friday Further Thought

God called prophets to lead people to know Him and remain faithful to Him. This was also the central purpose of Ellen G. White’s ministry: to lead people to Jesus and direct them to the Bible.

Ellen White had a deep love for Christ and a desire to share God’s love with others. Her five-book Conflict of the Ages series begins and ends with the words “God is love.” In Steps to Christ, she emphasized that spiritual growth and usefulness depend on a daily, living relationship with Jesus.

The Bible was the second major focus of her ministry. She described her writings as a “lesser light” intended to lead people to the “greater light”—God’s Word. She urged believers to make Scripture the foundation of their faith and practice, emphasizing that no additional light was given to replace the Bible.

Ellen White also taught that true prophets must uphold Christ’s teachings rather than human ideas. Throughout her ministry, she sought to keep Jesus and Scripture at the center of the Christian experience.

Ellen G. White is understood by Seventh-day Adventists as a noncanonical prophet, meaning that her writings are not considered part of the Bible or equal in authority to Scripture. Although Adventists believe she exercised the biblical gift of prophecy, her writings were produced by a human being and were not considered an addition to the biblical canon. Her books, including The Great Controversy, went through revisions and updates during her lifetime, reflecting changes in presentation, clarification, and historical detail. Some statements have also raised questions about accuracy and interpretation. These considerations remind readers that her writings should be examined thoughtfully and in the light of Scripture. White herself directed readers to the Bible as the supreme rule of faith and practice, and her writings should point people back to God's Word rather than replace it.
