Faith That God Counts as Righteousness
Genesis 15:6 gives us one of the clearest pictures of the gospel in the Old Testament: “And he believed in the Lord; and He accounted it to him for righteousness.” Abram had been given an incredible promise from God—that he would have descendants as numerous as the stars. Yet, from a human perspective, the promise seemed impossible. Abram was getting older, and he still had no child. But instead of trusting what he could see, Abram chose to trust what God had said.
Notice what God counted as righteousness. It was not Abram’s perfect performance, his accomplishments, or his ability to make the promise happen. Abram simply believed God. His faith was not merely believing that God existed; it was trusting that God would do exactly what He had promised.
This is the gospel. We cannot make ourselves righteous by trying harder or by becoming good enough. Our salvation rests on Jesus Christ and what He has already done for us. Like Abram, we are called to believe God’s promise and place our trust in Him. Our faith does not earn salvation; it takes hold of the salvation God freely offers through Christ.
That gives us tremendous hope. There may be times when we look at our lives and see failure, weakness, unanswered prayers, or circumstances that seem impossible. We may wonder how God could possibly fulfill His promises in our lives. But Abram reminds us that faith means trusting God even when we cannot yet see the outcome.
God does not ask us to have everything figured out. He asks us to trust Him. The same God who counted Abram’s faith as righteousness offers us the righteousness of Christ through faith. Our hope is not in how strong our faith is, but in how faithful God is.
So today, when you cannot see how God will work things out, remember Abram. Look beyond your circumstances and look to the One who made the promise. Jesus is faithful, and His promises are greater than what we can see.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of the gospel and for showing us through Abram that righteousness comes through faith. Help us to trust You when circumstances seem impossible and when we cannot see what lies ahead. Teach us to place our confidence not in ourselves, but in Jesus and His perfect righteousness. When we become discouraged, remind us that You are faithful and that Your promises can be trusted. Help us live each day by faith, knowing that our hope is secure in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
