Lesson 5 - Monday

God’s Word: A Perfect Gift for Our Lives

Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 3:15–17 and James 1:17

God has given us many wonderful gifts, but one of the most precious is His written Word. Through the Scriptures, we learn who God is, why we need a Savior, and how we can live lives that honor Him. The Bible is not merely a collection of ancient stories, wise sayings, or religious traditions. It is God's inspired message, given to guide us toward salvation through Jesus Christ and prepare us for the work He has called us to do.

In 2 Timothy 3:15–17, Paul reminds Timothy that the Holy Scriptures are able to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Notice that the purpose of Scripture is not simply to increase our knowledge or make us more religious. Its central purpose is to lead us to Jesus, the One who saves us from sin and offers us eternal life. We do not earn salvation by knowing the Bible, obeying its commandments, or performing good works. We are saved through faith in Jesus and what He accomplished for us. Yet the same Scriptures that lead us to Christ also teach us how to walk with Him.

Paul goes on to explain that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. What an important message! God has not left us to decide for ourselves what is true about Him, salvation, or the Christian life. He has provided His Word as our reliable guide. It teaches us what to believe, shows us when we are going in the wrong direction, corrects our mistakes, and trains us to live according to His will. When we allow Scripture to examine our hearts, it can reveal attitudes, habits, and beliefs that need to change. This correction is not evidence that God has stopped loving us. It is evidence that He wants to help us grow.

Paul concludes that the person of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. This means Scripture does more than prepare us for heaven someday; it prepares us to serve God faithfully today. Whether we are raising a family, helping a neighbor, encouraging someone who is discouraged, or sharing the gospel, God's Word gives us principles that guide our decisions and shape our character. We may not find a specific verse for every situation we encounter, but we can learn from Scripture the wisdom, love, honesty, and humility needed to respond in a Christlike way.

James 1:17 adds another beautiful truth: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights” (KJV). God is the source of everything genuinely good. His goodness does not change like shifting shadows. Human opinions, traditions, and popular ideas may change over time, but God remains faithful and His character remains constant. His Word reflects that faithfulness, giving us a dependable foundation when the world around us seems uncertain.

This also reminds us to be careful about placing human teachings above the Scriptures. Teachers, pastors, authors, and spiritual leaders may offer valuable insights, but their words must be examined in the light of God's written Word. We should never accept a teaching simply because a respected person presents it or because a tradition has existed for a long time. Our ultimate standard for determining biblical doctrine must be Scripture itself. As we read, we should ask God for wisdom, compare Scripture with Scripture, and remain willing to correct our understanding when we discover that we have been mistaken.

Most importantly, we must remember that the Bible's teachings are meant to bring us into a closer relationship with Jesus. It is possible to know many Bible facts and still fail to reflect His love. True study should lead us to trust Christ more deeply, appreciate His sacrifice more fully, and become more patient, compassionate, and faithful. We do not study the Bible to prove that we are better than others; we study it because we need the Savior it reveals.

What important message should we take from these verses? God's Word is a precious gift, inspired to lead us to salvation through Jesus and to equip us for a life of faithful service. We should cherish it, study it prayerfully, and allow it to correct and guide us. When confusion arises, we can return to the Scriptures with confidence, knowing that God has given us a trustworthy foundation for our faith. Let us never take this gift for granted. Instead, may we approach His Word with grateful hearts, willing minds, and a sincere desire to know and follow Jesus.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious gift of Your written Word. Thank You for giving us the Scriptures to teach us about Jesus, reveal Your character, and guide us toward salvation through faith in Him. Please give us wisdom and understanding as we study. Help us recognize truth, accept correction when we are wrong, and never place human opinions or traditions above Your Word. Teach us to apply what we learn in our daily lives so that our words, actions, and attitudes reflect the character of Jesus. Keep us humble, faithful, and willing to grow. May Your Word strengthen our faith, prepare us for every good work, and draw us closer to You each day. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
