The Role of New Testament Prophets
God’s Messengers for Building Up His People
Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 14:3; Ephesians 4:11–13; Revelation 22:6
God has always used prophets to communicate His messages to His people. In the Old Testament, prophets called people back to God, warned them of danger, and encouraged them to remain faithful. The New Testament continues this pattern, showing that the prophetic gift has an important purpose in the Christian church.
In 1 Corinthians 14:3, Paul explains that a prophet speaks to people for their “edification, and exhortation, and comfort.” In other words, prophetic messages are meant to build up the church, encourage believers, and bring comfort to those who need it. A genuine message from God should direct people toward Him, strengthen their faith, and help them live according to His Word.
Ephesians 4:11–13 adds that Christ gave prophets, along with apostles, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, to equip His people for ministry and build up the body of Christ. The goal is spiritual maturity, unity in the faith, and a deeper knowledge of Jesus. Prophecy is not given to make someone famous or to establish a person's authority over Scripture. Its purpose is to help God's people grow in Christ.
Revelation 22:6 reminds us that the prophetic messages recorded in that book are trustworthy because they come from the Lord, who reveals what His servants need to know. God does not give prophecy merely to satisfy our curiosity about the future. He gives His messages to guide His people, strengthen their faith, and prepare them to remain faithful to Jesus.
What does this mean for us today? We should appreciate the spiritual gifts God gives His church while carefully testing every claim of divine inspiration against Scripture. Not everyone who claims to speak for God necessarily does so, and sincerity alone does not establish a message's authority. The Bible remains our final standard for determining what we believe and how we live.
We should also remember that the purpose of God's messengers is not simply to give us information but to lead us into a closer relationship with Jesus. Whether we are encouraging someone who is discouraged, teaching a Bible lesson, or sharing the hope of Christ, we can participate in the work of building up His people. We may not all have the same spiritual gifts, but we can all help others grow in faith and love.
God's desire is for His church to become spiritually mature, united in Christ, and firmly grounded in His Word. As we study the Bible and follow Jesus, may we be willing to receive His truth, test what we hear, and share His encouragement with others.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving Your church spiritual gifts to strengthen our faith and help us grow in Jesus. Give us wisdom to recognize truth, discernment to test every message by Your Word, and humble hearts that are willing to follow Your guidance. Help us encourage those who are discouraged, build one another up in faith, and grow toward the spiritual maturity You desire for us. May everything we say and do point others to Jesus, our Savior and Lord. In His precious name, Amen.
