The Cross: Foolishness or the Power of God?
Key Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18; Colossians 1:20; 1 Peter 2:24
The cross of Jesus Christ is one of the most recognized symbols in the world. It appears on church buildings, jewelry, artwork, and even in cemeteries. Yet despite its familiarity, people view it in very different ways. Some see it as an outdated religious symbol. Others consider it a tragic story of an innocent man who died too young. But for those who have experienced God's grace, the cross is far more—it is the very power of God to save.
Paul writes, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18). The difference is not in the message itself but in the hearts of those who hear it. Those who reject God see no value in Christ's sacrifice. They cannot understand why anyone would worship a crucified Savior. To them, the cross seems weak and foolish.
However, believers see something entirely different. At Calvary, they see God's immeasurable love meeting humanity's greatest need. The cross reveals both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God's mercy. It reminds us that salvation could never be earned by human effort. Only Jesus could accomplish what we never could.
Paul explains in Colossians 1:20 that through the blood of His cross, Jesus reconciled us to God. Sin had separated humanity from its Creator. Every person stood guilty before a holy God. Yet instead of leaving us in our lost condition, Jesus stepped into our place. His death bridged the gap that sin had created and made peace possible between God and humanity.
Peter adds another beautiful truth: "He Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree" (1 Peter 2:24). Jesus did not merely suffer as an example of courage; He carried our sins upon Himself. He took the punishment we deserved so that we could receive the righteousness we did not deserve. Through His wounds we find healing—not only from the guilt of sin but also from its power over our lives.
The cross therefore accomplishes several wonderful things for every believer:
- It provides forgiveness for our sins.
- It reconciles us with God.
- It demonstrates God's limitless love.
- It breaks sin's control over our lives.
- It gives us the hope of eternal life.
The world often measures power by wealth, influence, or military strength. God demonstrated His greatest power through humble sacrifice. Satan thought the cross was his greatest victory, but it became his greatest defeat. What appeared to be weakness became the triumph of heaven. Through Christ's death came forgiveness, victory, and everlasting life.
Every day we have a choice about how we will view the cross. Will we treat it as merely another religious symbol, or will we see it as the place where our Savior paid the ultimate price for us? The closer we come to Calvary, the more we understand God's love and the more willing we become to surrender our lives completely to Him.
May we never lose our wonder at the cross. It is where justice and mercy met, where love conquered sin, and where eternal hope was secured for everyone who believes.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of Jesus Christ. Thank You that through His death on the cross You have forgiven our sins, reconciled us to Yourself, and given us the hope of eternal life. Help us never to see the cross as something ordinary or insignificant. Instead, let it remind us each day of Your amazing love and inspire us to live lives that honor You. May the power of the cross transform our hearts and draw us closer to Jesus until the day He returns. In His precious name we pray, Amen.
