Some believers placed great importance on the gift of tongues, but Paul wanted them to understand that every spiritual gift must be evaluated by its ability to strengthen and encourage the church. In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul explains why prophecy is more beneficial than speaking in tongues when tongues are not interpreted: prophecy communicates God’s message in a way that people can understand. Paul is not saying that the gift of tongues has no value. In 1 Corinthians 14:5, he acknowledges that speaking in tongues can be a genuine spiritual gift.
